Boids
Craig Reynolds' flocking model from 1986. Each bird only looks at the birds near it and follows three rules: don't crowd them, fly the same way they're flying, and stay close to them. Nobody is in charge, but you still get a flock. Move your mouse through them (or drag a finger) to scare them.
